Terpenes, Explained: The 6 That Decide How You Feel
The jar says indica, the menu says 22% THC, and neither line tells you how the next 3 hours will go. What shapes the character of a high is the terpene ratio, and on a good menu it is printed in a panel most shoppers scroll straight past. This is what those compounds are, what each one does, and how to use the numbers at the counter.
The short version
- Indica and sativa describe plant shape and geographic origin. They are botanical categories, not chemical ones, and they do not reliably predict how a product feels.
- No terpene is exclusive to either type. Myrcene, limonene and the rest occur in both, and only the ratios differ.
- Myrcene, linalool and caryophyllene track with heavy, body-forward effects. Limonene, pinene and terpinolene track with clear, alert, head-forward effects.
- Cannabinoids set how strong it is and how long it lasts. The terpene ratio sets what it actually feels like.

What indica and sativa actually describe
Both words describe the plant, not the chemistry inside it. Indica-type plants are short and bushy with broad, deep green leaflets and dense, compact buds, and they come from the Hindu Kush region across Afghanistan, Pakistan and northern India, where a short growing season at altitude favored fast, squat plants. Sativa-type plants are tall and lanky with narrow leaflets and airy, elongated buds, and they come from equatorial regions including Thailand, Colombia, Mexico and southern Africa, where long seasons allowed long flowering.

None of that travels with the chemistry. A short, broad-leafed plant can test limonene dominant and a tall, narrow-leafed one can test myrcene dominant, because plant architecture and terpene synthesis are governed by different genes under different selection pressure.
The genetics bear this out. A genome-wide study by Sawler and colleagues, published in PLOS ONE in 2015, found that reported sativa or indica ancestry correlated only moderately with actual genetic structure. A 2022 PLOS ONE analysis by Smith and colleagues went further on the commercial side, finding that the labels on retail products did not align with the chemical profiles those products tested at.
So the label tells you something about how the plant grew. It tells you very little about what happens after you use it.
Terpenes are in both plants, only the ratios change
Terpenes are the aromatic compounds that give cannabis its smell, and they are produced in the same trichome glands that produce THC and CBD. More than 150 have been identified in the plant, though only 3 to 5 usually appear at meaningful concentrations in any single batch.
They are not unique to cannabis. Limonene is the compound in citrus peel, pinene is what conifer resin smells like, linalool is the main note in lavender, and caryophyllene is what makes black pepper sharp.
This is the part that dissolves the indica and sativa framing: no terpene is exclusive to either type. There is no myrcene-only-in-indica rule and no limonene-only-in-sativa rule. Every one of these compounds shows up across both morphologies, and what differs between 2 plants is the proportion each contributes to the total.
The 3 terpenes behind a heavy, sedating high
Myrcene is the most common terpene in commercial cannabis and the one most often in the dominant slot. It smells earthy and musky with a ripe fruit note, closest to cloves, hops and overripe mango. Rodent research associates it with sedation and muscle relaxation, and a myrcene-led batch is the one that puts weight in your limbs.
Linalool is the floral one, clean lavender with a faint citrus edge underneath. It rarely dominates a panel and usually sits second or third, but it has an outsized effect on character when present. Animal studies point to anxiety-reducing and anticonvulsant activity through GABA-A receptor modulation, the same receptor family sedatives act on.
Caryophyllene smells like cracked black pepper, clove and warm wood. It is the odd one out chemically, because it is the only terpene known to bind a cannabinoid receptor directly: Gertsch and colleagues showed in PNAS in 2008 that beta-caryophyllene is a selective CB2 agonist. CB2 sits mostly in immune tissue rather than the brain, which fits what users report, physical relief without much added head effect.
The 3 terpenes behind a clear, energizing high
Limonene is bright lemon and orange peel, usually obvious the moment a jar is opened. It is associated with mood elevation and sociability, and rodent work links it to serotonin and dopamine activity in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. A limonene-forward batch is typically the talkative one.
Pinene smells exactly like it reads, pine needles with a rosemary edge. It is a bronchodilator, part of why pinene-heavy flower feels easier on the chest, and an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, meaning it slows the breakdown of acetylcholine. That mechanism is the basis of the proposal that pinene partly offsets the short-term memory disruption THC causes.
Terpinolene is the least familiar of the 6 and the most distinctive: green apple, fresh herbs and a faint lilac note. It dominates only a small share of batches, and those are the ones described as buzzy rather than smoothly energizing. If a product leaves you wired and scattered, terpinolene is a reasonable first suspect.

Read that table with 3 caveats attached. The effects column reports what users describe and what the animal literature suggests, not what controlled human trials have established at inhaled doses. The percentages are flower figures, and concentrates run several times higher. And a panel describes one batch on one day, so the same strain name at 2 stores can carry 2 different dominant terpenes.

How terpenes and THC divide the work
THC and CBD set the intensity and the duration. A 26% THC flower hits harder and lingers longer than an 18% one, all else equal, and that is the axis every menu already reports.
The terpene ratio sets the qualitative character on top of that intensity. It is the difference between 2 products at the same THC number where one flattens you on the sofa and the other has you reorganizing the kitchen. That is why chasing the highest THC figure on the board optimises the variable answering how much while leaving the one answering what kind entirely to chance.
What the entourage effect research actually found
The entourage effect is the proposal that cannabinoids and terpenes act together, so the whole plant produces effects isolated THC does not. The reference point is Ethan Russo's 2011 review in the British Journal of Pharmacology, which assembled the receptor-level evidence: caryophyllene at CB2, linalool at GABA, limonene on serotonin and dopamine pathways, and pinene's acetylcholinesterase inhibition as a counterweight to THC-induced memory impairment.
The mechanisms are real and separately documented. What is thinner is the evidence that they operate at the concentrations you actually inhale, since terpenes are a few percent of flower by weight, a fraction of that survives combustion, and most supporting studies used animals, isolated cells or aromatherapy-style exposure rather than people smoking a labeled batch.
The honest position sits in between. Terpene ratios are measurable, printed on a label and the best available predictor of character, which puts them well ahead of a strain name. They are not a dosing system, and anyone promising a specific outcome from a specific percentage is going past the evidence.
Chemovar: the label that replaced indica and sativa
A chemovar, short for chemical variety, classifies a plant by what it tests at rather than what it looks like or what its breeder called it. The standard split runs Type I for THC-dominant, Type II for roughly balanced THC and CBD, and Type III for CBD-dominant, with the dominant terpene named alongside it.
Under that system a product is a Type I, myrcene-dominant, caryophyllene-secondary flower at 1.8% total terpenes. That description is verifiable from the certificate of analysis and means the same thing in every state.
The older vocabulary cannot be rescued because of breeding history. Commercial cannabis has been crossbred continuously since the 1970s, and essentially everything on a dispensary shelf is a hybrid many generations deep. A "pure indica" claim on a 2026 menu is a marketing sentence rather than a lineage statement, and the sativa half of the shelf is in the same position.
Where terpene numbers sit on a dispensary menu
Terpene data lives on the certificate of analysis, the lab document tied to a specific harvest lot. Online menus that publish it show a short list under the THC and CBD figures, sometimes behind a "lab results" link, and in store it is on the label, in a binder, or on a tablet the staff can pull up.
Watch which units the lab used. Most report each terpene as a percentage of dry weight, so the figures are small and add up to the total. Some report each as a percentage of the total terpene content instead, so the numbers are much larger and add up to 100%, and reading a 32% figure as dry weight when it means a third of the panel will send you badly wrong.
Flower jars in Seattle stores usually carry a lot number on the label, and that lot is what the panel belongs to, not the strain name printed above it.
Worked example
Terpene panel printed on a 3.5 g flower jar, lot 24-0917:

Reading it takes 10 seconds. Myrcene at 0.71% clears the 0.5% line and holds 42% of the panel, so this batch will land heavy. Limonene at 0.44% is the second voice and takes some edge off the sedation. Everything from humulene down sits at 0.11% or lower, which is noise you can ignore. Total terpenes at 1.69% is respectable but not remarkable.
The jar was labeled sativa.
What to do when the menu lists only THC and a strain name
Most menus give you a strain name, a category word, a THC percentage and a price. Terpene testing is not part of the required panel in most state programs, so whether the numbers appear is a house decision rather than a legal one, which is why one Chicago menu carries 8 terpene percentages while the shop 2 miles away lists none.
When there is no panel your nose is the backup instrument, and it is better than it sounds. Terpenes are the smell, so the aroma off an opened jar is a direct reading of the ratio without the decimal places.
Worked example
The listing gives you: Blue Dream, Sativa, THC 24.6%, $42 per eighth. Nothing else.
That tells you roughly how strong it is and nothing about how it will feel. Work through it in this order:
- Ask for the COA for that lot. Most shops can pull it up in under a minute.
- If the COA has no terpene section, ask what the jar smells like when it is opened. Pepper and damp earth is a caryophyllene and myrcene batch. Lemon and pine is the other end of the range.
- If you cannot smell it and no panel exists, treat 24.6% as the only real data point you have and buy the smallest quantity the shop sells.
What to ask a budtender
Ask about the document, not the vibe. Staff cannot tell you how a product will make you feel, because that depends on your tolerance, your dose and your body, but they can tell you what the lab measured.
Every licensed shop holds the certificate of analysis for every lot on its shelves, because it is a condition of the product being there. Asking for it is routine.
Numbers
4 questions that get real answers, in the order that works:
- "Can I see the COA for this lot?"
- "What is the dominant terpene on it, and what percentage?"
- "What is the total terpene number?"
- "When was it harvested?"
Skip "what do you recommend for sleep". That question gets you whatever is labeled indica. Asking for a myrcene-dominant flower testing above 0.5% gets you the thing that actually behaves that way.
Why the same strain tests differently at 2 stores
A strain name is not a specification. It describes a genetic cut passed between growers for years, and the same cut grown in 2 different rooms produces 2 different chemical profiles.
Light intensity, temperature, nutrient schedule, harvest timing, dry speed and cure length all move the terpene numbers, and terpenes are volatile enough that a fast, hot dry strips the lighter ones before the product reaches a shelf. Blue Dream from 2 different farms is 2 different products, and if one grower is in Grand Rapids and the other is 2,000 miles away, the seed stock, the room and the cure all differ, so the panels come out different too.
The name is a starting point for a conversation. The panel is the only thing describing the jar in front of you.
Numbers
Find the harvest or packaged date before comparing 2 jars carrying the same strain name.
A jar packaged 4 months ago has lost a share of its lighter terpenes to evaporation, and pinene and terpinolene go first. The panel was true on the day of the test, not the day you open the jar. If 2 shops both list Wedding Cake at a similar price, the fresher lot is usually the better buy even when the older one tests higher on paper.
What indica and sativa are still good for
The labels are not useless, they are being asked the wrong question. For anyone growing the plant they carry real information: flowering time, final height, internodal spacing, canopy shape and mold resistance in humid conditions.
A grower under a 7 ft ceiling has a genuine reason to care whether a cut runs indica-leaning, because a 12 ft plant in that room is a problem no nutrient schedule fixes, and a producer scheduling a 9-week cycle rather than a 13-week one has the same reason. The failure is in the translation to retail, where a description of plant architecture got repurposed as a prediction of effect.

Do terpenes determine whether cannabis is classified as indica or sativa?
No. The classification rests on plant morphology and geographic origin, and terpene content plays no part in it. A plant with indica structure can test limonene-dominant, which is the profile usually attached to the sativa label.
Which terpene makes you sleepy?
