Why the Same Strain Differs by Grower, Batch and Store

You bought Blue Dream twice and got two different nights. Same name on the jar, same THC range, different result. The name is not a specification. It is a label a grower chose, attached to a plant whose chemistry was set by genetics, light, harvest timing and cure. Here is what actually varies between two jars, and how to read the one number set on the menu that predicts something.

The short version

  • A strain name is not a spec. In a 2019 genetic study of 122 retail samples covering 30 strain names, most named strains contained at least one genetic outlier, so 2 jars sharing a name are not reliably the same plant.
  • Indica and sativa describe plant shape and geographic origin, not chemistry. Across more than 100 samples analysed in 2021, sativa-labelled and indica-labelled plants were genetically indistinct on a genome-wide scale.
  • The same terpenes occur in both plant types. None is exclusive to either one. Only the ratios move.
  • Total terpene content in dried flower usually tests between 1% and 3%. Any single terpene below 0.5% is trace, not a driver.
  • Cannabinoids set the intensity and duration. Terpene ratios shape the character of it.
  • Plenty of menus publish no terpene data at all. When that happens, your options are the batch certificate of analysis or your nose.

What a strain name actually promises

Nothing measurable. There is no registry, no certifying body and no standard a grower has to meet before printing a name on a jar. A cultivator who buys seeds labelled Wedding Cake, grows them out and sells the result is entitled to call it Wedding Cake, and so is the cultivator down the road working from a completely different mother plant.

Seeds make this worse rather than better. A pack of 10 seeds from the same cross produces 10 genetically distinct plants, and a grower picks one, calls it the keeper, and clones it for years. Two growers working from the same seed line end up with two different plants, both correctly named.

The research bears this out. Schwabe and McGlaughlin's 2019 analysis in the Journal of Cannabis Research genotyped 122 samples covering 30 strain names bought from dispensaries in Colorado, California and Washington, and found that most named strains contained at least one genetic outlier, with strain names often failing to reflect a meaningful genetic identity.

Why one grower's Blue Dream is not another's

Even with identical genetics, the plant that reaches the shelf is a product of how it was grown and what happened after it was cut. Light intensity, root temperature, feed schedule and the week the grower chose to harvest all move the terpene numbers before the flower ever reaches a dry room.

The cure is where the biggest losses happen. Monoterpenes such as myrcene and limonene are volatile at room temperature, so a fast, warm dry drives off a meaningful share of them while a slow, cool one keeps more in the flower.

Scale multiplies the effect. A multi-state brand grows the same cultivar in separate facilities under separate equipment in each state it operates in, so the Illinois jar and the Nevada jar share a name and a lineage claim and not much else, which is why the same brand on Las Vegas menus can list a different dominant terpene than it does 1,700 miles east.

Worked example

Grower A has one clear driver: myrcene, well above 0.5%, with a supporting pine note. Grower B has nothing above 0.5% at all, so no single compound is shaping the experience and the character will read as flat and generic. Both jars are legitimately Blue Dream. They are not the same product.

Indica and sativa describe the plant, not the chemistry

The two words are real botanical descriptions of how a plant grows and where it came from. They are not descriptions of what is inside it, and they do not reliably predict effects.

The chemistry does not travel with the shape. In Nature Plants in 2021, Watts and colleagues analysed more than 100 samples for terpene and cannabinoid content alongside more than 100,000 genetic markers, and found sativa-labelled and indica-labelled samples were genetically indistinct across the genome. What the labels did track was variation in a small number of terpenes controlled by clusters of terpene synthase genes.

Decades of crossbreeding finished the job. Almost everything on a US shelf is a hybrid many generations deep, so a pure indica or pure sativa lineage claim on a menu is a marketing statement rather than a botanical one. The useful replacement is the chemovar framing: describe the plant by its measured chemistry, meaning its cannabinoid ratio and its dominant terpenes, and let the name be a name.

Terpenes are in both plants, only the ratios move

Terpenes are the aromatic compounds produced in the same trichomes that make cannabinoids. They are what you smell when the jar opens, and they are not unique to cannabis: limonene is the smell of citrus peel, pinene is pine needles, linalool is lavender.

No terpene belongs to indica or to sativa. Myrcene, limonene, caryophyllene, pinene, linalool and terpinolene all occur in plants of both descriptions. What differs from plant to plant is which one dominates and by how much.

Read that table with its limits attached. The percentages are what a panel typically shows when that terpene leads, not a guarantee; labs use different extraction and quantification methods, so the same flower can return slightly different numbers at two facilities. The effect column reports what these compounds are associated with, not what your jar will do to you.

The sedating set: myrcene, linalool and caryophyllene

Myrcene smells earthy and musky, close to ripe mango, and it is the most common dominant terpene in commercial flower. It is the compound most often behind the heavy, sink-into-the-couch quality people attribute to indica labelling, and it has been studied for sedative and muscle-relaxant activity in animal models.

Linalool is floral and unmistakably lavender. Its calming reputation comes from work showing anxiolytic and sedative activity mediated through GABA-A receptors, the same receptor family that anti-anxiety medications act on. It rarely dominates a panel, and 0.3% is a high reading for it.

Caryophyllene smells of black pepper and clove, and it is the structural oddity of the group. Gertsch and colleagues showed in PNAS in 2008 that beta-caryophyllene is a selective agonist at the CB2 receptor, making it the only common terpene known to bind a cannabinoid receptor directly. CB2 sits mostly outside the brain in immune tissue, which is why caryophyllene is associated with body relief rather than head effects.

The energizing set: limonene, pinene and terpinolene

Limonene is bright citrus peel. Rodent inhalation studies have reported changes in serotonin and dopamine activity in brain regions tied to mood, which is the mechanism usually offered for its elevating reputation. It is one of the more common secondary terpenes and frequently sits behind myrcene rather than leading.

Pinene smells like pine needles and rosemary. Its clear-headed association rests on work showing that alpha-pinene inhibits acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter central to attention and memory. High pinene alongside high THC is the profile people reach for when they want function rather than fog.

Terpinolene is the hardest to place by smell: herbal, faintly apple, a little nutmeg. It leads far fewer panels than the others, and when it does lead it tends to be the marker of the bright, racy cultivars that get sold as sativas. If a jar tests terpinolene-dominant above 0.5%, that is a real signal about its character.

Cannabinoids set the intensity, terpenes set the character

The division of labour is simple. THC and the other cannabinoids determine how strong the experience is and how long it lasts. Terpene ratios shape what kind of experience it is: bright or heavy, clear or foggy, body or head.

Ethan Russo's 2011 paper in the British Journal of Pharmacology laid out the entourage effect that underpins this, arguing that cannabinoids and terpenoids act together, with terpenoids modulating the effect of THC rather than acting as passive aroma. That framework explains why two jars at 24% THC can land completely differently.

Be honest about how far the evidence goes. Most of the receptor-level work behind the individual terpenes comes from animal studies or isolated-cell assays, often at concentrations well above what a fraction of a percent in inhaled flower delivers. The direction of these effects is well supported. The size of them in a real human smoking a real jar is not settled.

How to read a terpene panel on a menu or a COA

The panel sits on the certificate of analysis, the lab document tied to a specific harvest batch. Online menus that publish terpene data pull it from that COA and show it under the potency numbers, usually as a total terpene percentage followed by the individual compounds in descending order.

Work top down and apply one rule: anything below 0.5% is noise. A panel listing 14 compounds looks impressive until you notice 11 of them read 0.06% and are there because the lab tests for them, not because they are in the plant in any meaningful amount.

Whether you get a panel at all is a per-shop decision more than a state one. Some Seattle dispensaries publish the full lab breakdown on every flower listing while a store on the next block gives you a strain name, a THC figure and nothing else.

Worked example

Gelato #33, 3.5 g. THC 24.8%, CBD 0.1%, total terpenes 2.1% Limonene 0.82%, caryophyllene 0.61%, myrcene 0.34%, pinene 0.19%, linalool 0.07%, humulene 0.05%

Two drivers clear the 0.5% line: limonene and caryophyllene. Everything below them is trace. Expect a citrus and pepper character with body relief rather than sedation, and expect it to be strong, because 24.8% THC sets the intensity. The listing is tagged indica-dominant hybrid. The panel says otherwise, and the panel is the measurement.

What to ask a budtender

Ask about the jar in front of you, not about the strain in general. A budtender who is quoting the strain's usual profile is quoting the internet; a budtender pulling up the batch COA is telling you what is in that specific package.

At the counter

  1. "Can I see the COA for this batch, not the strain's typical numbers?"
  2. "What is the packaging date on this jar?"
  3. "Which terpene is dominant, and what does it test at?"
  4. "What do you have on the shelf right now above 2% total terpenes?"

A good answer to question 3 is a compound and a number. "It's an indica, so it'll relax you" is an answer about the label, and the label is not the measurement.

When the menu shows only THC and a strain name

This is the common case in most markets, and there is no trick that recovers the missing data. If the numbers are not published, you are buying on brand reputation and smell, so buy accordingly.

At the counter

  • Ask whether the shop can print or pull up the COA. Many can, even when the website does not show it.
  • Smell it if the store keeps sniff jars. A jar with no smell has no terpenes left, whatever the paperwork once said.
  • Buy the smallest unit first. One gram is a cheap test of a grower you have not tried.
  • Write down the brand, the cultivar and the batch number of anything that works. The strain name alone will not get you back to it.
  • Treat the indica, sativa and hybrid tag as a filing system the shop uses, not a prediction.

What indica and sativa are still good for

The labels are not useless. They are just useless for the job most menus give them.

For a grower they carry real planning information: how tall the plant gets, how much canopy space it needs, whether it finishes in 8 weeks or 13, and whether it can be run outdoors in a short season. A cultivator choosing between a 9-week compact plant and a 13-week stretcher is making a decision the words describe accurately.

For a shopper they work as loose shorthand for what a shop has decided to stock a product as, which is worth knowing when you are scanning 60 listings and need to narrow the field. Use them to filter. Do not use them to predict.

Do the same strain names have the same terpene profile at every dispensary?

No. Two jars of the same strain from different growers routinely test with different dominant terpenes and different totals, and even the same grower's next harvest will read differently. A jar bought at a Portland shop and one bought 2,000 miles away share a name and a lineage claim, nothing more.

Do terpenes determine whether cannabis is classified as indica or sativa?
